Yellow Jackets

Appearance

3/8in to 5/8in black with yellow bands. Two wings. Six legs.

Habitat

Most yellow jacket nests are located underground. Most commonly they are disturbed by a lawnmower or someone stepping on the nesting area.

How do they affect you?

A yellow jacket sting is very powerful. Each one has the ability to sting multiple times. This is dangerous for small children and people who allergic. Multiple stings, for some, can become life threatening.

What can we do?

Whiteface Hornets

Appearance

5/8in to 1in Black and white in color. They are closely related to yellow

Habitat

Nests are located in elevated areas, usually in non-visible areas such as in bushes and shrubs. The over wintering queen chooses the nesting area. Some nests have been found over two feed in diameter. Whiteface hornets are beneficial because they assist in controlling various small insects.

How do they affect you?

These hornets will sting. They have the capability of stinging multiple times. Though they are beneficial in the wild, if a nest is found in a recreational area, it becomes dangerous.

Paper Wasps

Appearance

5/8” to 1¾” and brown with yellow stripes. Two wings and six legs.

Habitat

They live in paper-like nests, with a honeycomb interior. They need a branch or twig to start the nest on. If the queen is not removed, the nest will be rebuilt quickly. Like many types of wasps, they are beneficial to the environment, except when they are in the vicinity of humans. The nest must be removed, and treated. These wasps enjoy feeding on caterpillars, flies, and beetle larvae.

How do they affect you?

Nests can be formed in the same area Whiteface hornets are, in bushes in shrubs. Yard work around your home can easily disturb a nest. Papers wasps have a powerful sting and there have been extreme cases of people being hospitalized from a swarm or allergic reaction to the sting.
