If you have a drywood termite infestation, you need to make sure you deal with the problem promptly and completely. If any termites are left behind, there’s a chance of the infestation returning. That’s why you need to use a method that comes with a high success rate; termite fumigation – also known as ‘tenting.’
Drywood termites live inside structures and can cause a lot of damage in a short amount of time. If you think you’re dealing with a drywood termite infestation, don’t hesitate to schedule a termite inspection with one of O'Connor Pest Control’s experts. Catching a termite problem early will minimize structural damage.

How Does Termite Fumigation Work?
Fumigation takes a while, but the process is fairly simple. Below is the list of steps our technicians will take:
- The most important step in fumigation is sealing the structure. This is done by covering the entire building with a tarp to keep the gas from escaping.
- Once the structure is sealed, your O'Connor Pest Control technician will pump termiticide gas inside.
- The gas will be left to sit for a few days to allow it to reach every inch of the structure.
- When fumigation is complete, the structure will be unsealed so the gas can escape.
- Once the gas has cleared, your technician will ensure it’s safe to move back in.
If you have any other questions about the fumigation process, don’t hesitate to ask our team!
How Do I Prepare for Fumigation?
As we’ve mentioned, the fumigation process takes a few days to complete. That does mean you’ll have to leave the building for that time. Your technician will give you a full, detailed list of steps to take, but generally speaking, you can expect the following:
- You will need to arrange for somewhere else to stay. It is not safe to stay in a building while it is being fumigated.
- Remove any indoor plants. If you have pet fish, they should also be removed.
- You may leave food where it is, but it will need to be sealed in airtight bags. This includes food in the fridge.

Benefits of Termite Fumigation
Fumigating is the most effective method for completely eradicating a termite infestation. That benefit speaks for itself; if you want termites out of your home or business, fumigation is the surest way to do it. Because the termiticide gas permeates the entire structure – including wall voids – you can be certain that every termite present gets a dose.
Can Drywood Termites Be Treated Without Tenting?
There are a few potential alternatives to tenting. These solutions generally aren’t as effective, but under some circumstances, they may be used anyway. Not everyone can leave their home long enough for fumigation to be completed, for example. Below we’ll list a few alternatives to fumigation, as well as their pros and cons.
- Whole-house heat. As the name suggests, this method involves heating the interior of the house to a temperature that termites cannot survive (over 100°F.) This process is quicker than fumigation but isn’t guaranteed to kill every termite.
- Localized heat. This process also uses heat to kill termites. This only works for small-scale issues; you cannot treat an entire structure this way.
- Liquid treatment. This type of treatment is best for subterranean termites. It is applied in a perimeter around the structure and kills termites that live in the ground, as opposed to drywood termites, which live in the structure itself.
- Bait stations. Another type of outdoor treatment. Termite traps will attract termites before they settle into a structure, but they can’t do as much against an infestation that has already found a place to stay.
