WHAT ARE GOPHERS?

Named after their cheek pouches, pocket gophers are medium-sized burrowing rodents that range in length from 5 to 14 inches. Gopher species can be found throughout the Great Plains, in the Southeast, and in the West – like here in California. Gophers prefer loose, sandy soil with edible plant cover, making lawns and crop fields ideal homes for them. While they can wreak havoc on your property, they’re actually crucial for their native ecosystems because they help aerate the soil with how much they move it as they dig their tunnels. These tunnels also capture rainfall and snowmelt, which helps prevent erosion that would be caused by water simply flowing over the surface of the land.

WHAT ARE MOLES?

Small, burrowing animals, moles have poorly developed eyes but an incredible sense of touch with their extremely sensitive snouts – the protrusions on the star-nosed mole are 6 times more sensitive to touch than a human hand. They also have long, clawed toes for digging tunnels.

Some mole species have fur that sticks straight up, trapping less fur when they back up through a tunnel than regular mammal fur that lays flat and points toward the tail. Most mole species don’t get longer than 10 inches.

Shrew moles are native to the West Coast, while other mole species live in the southern Great Plains and the eastern states. Although the desert shrew can live in arid regions, most moles live in grassland, woodland, meadow, or riparian habitats.

Fun fact: An eastern mole can hollow out a 160-foot burrow in a single night – the equivalent of a human digging a half-mile tunnel by hand in the same amount of time!

When moles dig tunnels, all that dirt gets piled in a “molehill” near the entrance to the tunnel. These are a strong indicator that you have moles in your yard.

HOW CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOPHERS AND MOLES?

Pocket gophers have long incisors that poke out from their mouth and eyes that are easy to see, while moles have tiny, unapparent eyes and small teeth. Even their tunnels look different: mole tunnels leave raised ridges in the ground, while gopher tunnels don’t.
